Capitol Hill food+drink: Cure, Skillet, Confectional opening dates, Harvest Vine dodges fire scare

Inside the about-to-open Cure (Images: CHS)

Another wave of new players in the Capitol Hill food and drink scene is about to arrive. Details on three new places about to open are below. Have a tip to share with your CHS pals? [email protected]

  • Pinpointing the exact opening date of a new bar or restaurant is a frustrating science. Permits, contractors, suppliers, employees — all must line up and hit the ground running in an organizational accomplishment that should make any new owner proud. Especially once the doors finally open. Three new Hill food and drink entities are about to reach this logistical fruition. We might even see one tomorrow. Amy Haldane told CHS earlier Monday morning that her new meat, cheese and wine shop on Nagle Place is on track for a Tuesday opening. UPDATE: See? We said you need to stay flexible on these things — Cure’s doors should open for first time on Wednesday at 4p, we’re now told.

    Eric Haldane

Barring any last-minute setbacks, Cure will celebrate its first Tuesday through Sunday sequence on the edge of Cal Anderson starting this week. CHS was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the new space and found Eric Haldane hard at work putting his kitchen through its paces as opening day approaches. Could be Tuesday. Could be Wednesday. Like we said, there are logistics afoot. But the good news is the “amazing charcuterie from Italy and Spain” has arrived.

  • Also entering the homestretch is 14th and Union’s Skillet Diner. Skillet’s Josh Henderson tells CHS he is targeting a Friday, May 20th opening for the first fixed-place restaurant in his foodie empire.
  • Completing the triumvirate of newbies announcing target dates is The Confectional. The cheesecake shop that built a name for itself providing sweets in Pike Place Market will join Poppy on north Broadway on June 4th, according to Seattle Weekly.
  • Want a good way to keep track of these (possibly) moving targets? You can monitor Cure’s progress at http://www.cureseattle.com, keep track of Skillet with @skilletstfood and follow The Confectional here @confectional.
  • It’s Elysian’s 15th anniversary. We asked Dick Cantwell how he got started on Capitol Hill. He answered:

Capitol Hill was always the place we wanted to be as we did due diligence and checked out other neighborhoods in Seattle–Ballard was another; in fact, we looked at the present Hale’s location before they did. We kept dreading that someone would beat us to the punch, and in fact McMenamin’s put the Six Arms in around the same time. Before we even opened, Ed Murray’s folks called us to see if they could kick off his campaign in the space. They said it was the biggest place they’d found on Capitol Hill. more…

  • Seattle Beer Week is coming up — including the annual Quinn’s BBQ on May 21.
  • The Tin Table is sporting a new menu. You can check it out at http://www.thetintable.com/
  • SugarPill apothecary on E Pine near Nagle finally has its own front door. A busy Karyn Schwartz at the start of Mother’s Day weekend said she was still getting used to the change in flow but happy to have a direct entrance from Pine. We visited SugarPill here.
  • Seattle Times loves the rebooted Sage Cafe –formerly Hillside Quickie.
  • East Olive Way’s revamped and liquored-up Starbucks celebrated its first ever beer-y Cinco de Mayo.
  • East Madison’s Harvest Vine is off-Hill but a worthwhile walk. The restaurant also recently posted a warning and pictures from a situation that could have been much more damaging to their business:

I would like to caution all restaurants from putting candles in your restrooms. The fire marshal told me of two other restaurants in Seattle where the exact same thing happened within the past couple of months. The ambience is not worth the risk.

  • We’re told of new hours at super popular 12th Ave bagelry Eltana: “Eltana has new operating hours starting May 12th! Yay! Sun–Wed 6am to 4pm, Thurs–Sat 6am to 10pm”
  • May’s CHS Happy Hour is Wednesday (May 11!) at East Olive Way’s Tommy Gun. Facebook event and RSVP list.

Can’t wait to check out cure! And their 10 lb. meat sale.

Any word on when the Eltana late night bagel window will be up and running?

Saha,

Thanks for your interest! As much as we’d like to get that oil burning 24 hours, we’re not quite there yet. You’ll have to experience our dinner offerings first, available starting this Thursday :)

Analog coffee is getting there too! I am super psyched about it. Their coffee is freaking delicious!

Funny. Drove by Skillet last night around 8:00 and the place was PACKED! Wonder if that was a practice run for family and friends.

The question was about Eltana’s walk-up window — coming later, apparently

It was a thank you party for the residents of the Chloe, for enduring the construction. Not a full menu, but plenty of goodies to eat and drink! The staff is friendly, welcoming, and seem happy to be there. Thanks to them all, they have garnered some good faith from me!
