It was a good day: Noting a quiet weekend in the East Precinct

This map of Friday night’s activity from the city’s records of Seattle Police Department’s 911 incident responses tells a small story. Things, knock on whatever, have been very quiet on the crime front on Capitol Hill and across most of the East Precinct.

We’re only looking at the incidents related to violence and property crime in this view — there were plenty of reports of “suspicious circumstances” and alcohol violations as usual. But the streets over recent weeks and months have been pretty calm this spring. Even the burglaries that seemed to be picking up are, anecdotally, slowing down. And on Friday, it’s as if a ring of calm surrounded the Hill just to show how quiet things have been.

Muggings and assaults are one thing, of course — the unsolved murder of Zachary Lewis is quite another beyond trends and stats and numbers.

Unfortunately, SPD statistics won’t be available for months — we’re just now getting around to posting the annual 2010 trends — so we don’t know if the numbers will bear it out. But this Friday, at least, was a safe and mostly quiet good time on Capitol Hill.
