Hill food and drink notes: Thai Curry Simple set to open, goodbye Kurrent

Got a tip? [email protected] or call/txt (206) 399-5959

  • Capitol Hill’s new walk-up Thai Curry Simple is set to open this week for a “preview” Thursday at 11 AM, according to http://www.thaicurrysimple.com. The new to-go only eatery will have an all-veggie menu and will re-activate the shack left empty since the departure of Barista Boyz coffee. You can follow them on Twitter at http://twitter.com/#!/thaicurrysimple
  • Tipster tells CHS the owners of East Pine’s Kurrent have thrown in the bar towel and are handing over the lease on the lounge to a new tenant. The bar is closed as of now, apparently, and the new owner will be working in coming months to transform the space into a restaurant, tipster says. We found nothing on file with any names yet regarding the new owner. More when we find it.
  • Now that’s it’s been open for a bit, 10th Ave East’s Pau Hana is ready to celebrate with a grand opening this Friday and Saturday with $5 pupus and drink special 4 to 7 PM.
  • Nagle Place karaoke bar Rock Box is gearing up for a Tuesday, December 7 opening. They also had their liquor license approved and have decided to go 21+ only. All, via their Facebook page.
  • Also Facebook stalking, Grim is close to opening doors in the former Grey Gallery space it sounds like birdy says a preview party is *tentatively* planned for Saturday. They’ve also begun promoting the Butterfly Lounge component of the 11th Ave food and drink space.
  • Packard Building’s Varro is also getting closer to an opening. The 12th Ave lounge will be holding a pre-opening preview event for Facebook fans on Friday.
  • Rosebud’s new interior look (Image: Rosebud)

Have you seen what Broadway Grill looks like after a summer makeover?

  • How about Rosebud’s overhaul? Thanks for the picture, Robert.
  • The Lobby Bar won Seattle Magazine’s People Choice award for best new bar of 2010.
  • 1,000,000 people are attending the Bake It in a Cake cupcake party at Porchlight Coffee on December 11. Stranger writer Megan Seling is the genius behind BIiaC.
  • The guy behind the People’s Parking Lot is talking about organizing a Capitol Hill community kitchen as a Hill caterer closes shop.
  • From the CHS reviews, Quinn’s:

It’s been a minute or so since I was taken there. My arm was twisted to go there for a date, and no it didn’t work out. I ate my first tartare there. Meh. Also, I had my first steamed mussels and homemade chorizo. Meh. It was good, but I’d really rather go to Dick’s. It’s a little spendy, but it parallels any other higher end establishment on the hill.

  • Also, Pike St. Fish Fry:

Fresh fish, perfect batter, and crisp fries paired with harrissa, lemon aioli, and curry ketchup. The pulled pork sandwich is so full of flavor and texture I usually order the fish and the sandwich to split with a friend. Nice service, good music and a chic nautical atmosphere make this one of my favorite places on the hill.

  • Yelper says too many desk jockeys at Joe Bar.
  • Sun Liquor Distillery coming in January as soon as its still gets here.
  • Oddfellows, Smith start their Meatless Mondays promotion today.
  • The BeerPong Association tells us their final tournament party is at Vermillion, December 13.
  • Jai Thai is now doing trivia on Thursdays. More Hill trivia spots.
  • Broadway’s Poppy has a deal for holiday group dinners. Groups of 7 or more can get a special three-course dinner for $30 per person. Details on our #chxmas post.

Thank-freaking-god. Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Kurrent.

I concur. Personally, I will not miss Kurrent. I’m looking forward to the next iteration of that space, hopefully its something worth going to.

does anyone else think the continuous opening of new thai spots (veggie or non-veggie alike) is getting slightly out of control? i’d love to see something different around here. something good and fast and affordable, and non-thai at this point.

You mean I won’t have to walk ankle-deep through the cigarette butts in front of Kurrent anymore? I will miss those weird drink (?) specials posted in the window….a taco if you buy two drinks anyone?

I think I’m part of the problem. I adore Thai food, and I can eat it almost every day… I’m pretty happy that Wedgewood opened, I’ve added it to my list of favorites alongside Jamjuree and Rom Mai Thai.

….howEVER, I do agree that we need more variety!

seriously. happy for the change and hoping the next joint wont attract so many SUV-fuls of over-cologned gorillas and barb-nasties.

the yelper is right. it’s impossible to get a seat there to eat food / drink coffee leisurely to the extent that i avoid it entirely. there are plenty of cafes set up better for laptop jockeys than the joe bar like the fauxbucks nearby or the online on olive, and it can’t be good for their business.

never did have luck eating there. My vote is for a GOOD Mexican resturant like Jalisco in Queen Anne. There use to be one on Rep/15th – miss it!

I had a chance to check out the opening of Thai Curry Simple today with some of my co-workers. We had the Panang Tofu and Green Curry Tofu. For you meat eaters I should mention they had a Red Curry Chicken and a Massamun Chicken. The owner was there and very friendly and excited. Our meals were great and a good deal at $6 with rice (most charge extra for rice). The chili sauce on the side (so you can spicey to your likey) was superb. While I was waiting in line a few SU students passed by. The people before me seemed to know them from class and said they should eat here. One of the guys was holding a $7+ “Podog” and stated “6 bucks woah that is expensive!”. Intended or not I enjoyed the irony.
