Hill bike theft update: Developer’s rides pilfered in brazen daytime job plus possible bus bike scam

Two warnings on (new!) ways to have your bike stolen. First, an e-mail we received late last night that proves that, when it comes to bike crime, not even the Hill’s powerful elite are safe:

I’m the owner of the OddFellows building, and both my and my wife’s mountain bikes were stolen from the back of my car earlier today in the parking lot behind Rancho Bravo.  It happened some time between 1pm and 4pm.

If anyone has seen someone with either my bike (large Black Santa Cruz Nomad w/ adjustable seat post) or my wife’s (blue hardtail bike, medium size), I would sure appreciate knowing about it.

At any rate, I thought it worth putting the news out there so people could be aware- this is a pretty bold theft of locked bikes from a car in broad daylight!

thanks,

Ted Schroth

Neighbor Ted’s bike loss, by the way, was one of seven reported on the Hill in the last week, according to SeattleCrime.com:

  1. 900 E Pine
  2. 500 15th Ave E
  3. 900 Summit Ave E
  4. 200 Broadway E
  5. 1700 Summit Ave
  6. 400 E Olive
  7. 900 12th Ave

There’s also this alert posted to CHS last night about a possible scammer working the 545 bus route:

The lady told the bus driver that the previous guy wanted her to take the bike, and that she’d give him her name and everything. The bus driver told her no, that she could not take the bus if she didn’t own it, that it would go to the station in lost & found, and asked her to call him back and tell the guy what would happen. She claimed she did not have the guy (who just called her)’s number and didn’t know his name, the bus driver retorted that she could just use her phone’s caller ID to reach him. She let loose a series of fake giggles and claimed she did not know how to use her phone.

After the bus driver told her NO for the umpteenth time and she sat down fuming, the ACTUAL owner of the bike (not the person the lady was claiming to know) came forward to get off at his stop. He wrote up a short report, giving his ID, contact #, and where he purchased the bike to the driver.

Sorry about your bikes but the tone of your post makes you sound a bit douchey…..pictures might be a good idea, maybe someone would recognize them. Good luck.

I don’t find it douchey at all… if it hadn’t been the owner of the building I doubt you’d think it so. He was just asking for help finding his bikes and warning others. It comes across as ‘douchey’ because CHS used the term “powerful elite” in italics beforehand.

I found two quick release bicycle wheels dumped in the bushes in Volunteer Park on Sunday morning. The police have them now. If you have had a bike stolen recently, or just the wheels, try contacting the police with a description. While it’s apparently rare to recover stolen bikes, it can happen – make sure you have a good description of your bike, proof of ownership, and follow up with the police soon after the theft to see if they’ve recovered any bikes.

“tone of your post makes you sound a bit douchey”

How? The “powerful elite” thing was a joke added by the editor.
