Broadway farmers market returns with Mother’s Day opening

A weekly celebration of fresh and as-local-as-possible fruits, vegetables, flowers and more returns for its final season in its home in the lot at the corner of 10th Ave and Thomas. The Broadway Farmers Market 2010 season starts Sunday just in time for Mom’s Day.

The lot the market currently calls home is slated for a major mixed-used development. SRM Developers, the company behind that project, reached an agreement with the market’s organizers for the event to continue in its curren home through the 2010 season ending on December 19. A design review for the 230 Broadway project is coming up later in the week. More info about that from CHS soon.

Sound Transit is working on a plan to include a home on Nagle Place for the weekly market in its light rail station design when that facility opens in 2016. Where the market will call home for the years in between is still being worked out. Possibilities discussed publicly to-date include Seattle Central and streets near Cal Anderson Park.

Another new factor for the weekly market is the growth of the Hill’s fresh food providers like Rain Shadow Meats and cheese monger Calf and Kid. Both shops recently opened in the renovated Melrose Market.

I can’t wait for the market to open again. I’ve been missing my ice cream and pretzels!

I’m really excited that there’s a farmers’ market in the neighbourhood! (I’m moving to Capitol Hill this month from Canada.) Does the market offer mostly organic produce, or is any local produce welcome? Just wonderin’.
