This just in from tipster Andrew. The SuperCuts at Denny and Olive Way — one of the last in Seattle — will be providing its final Capitol Hill styles on Sunday. The sign’s list of where to find your favorite SuperCut stylist after Sunday is charming and kinda sad.
Unlike other recent closures of chains on the Hill, Regis Corp., the company behind SuperCuts, has weathered the financial storm well and says it will expand once conditions improve.
It will be interesting to see what if anything fills the space at the busy intersection. The mix of eclectic — Bus Stop, Holy Smoke and Pretty Parlor with Dinette, The Elite, Crescent Lounge and The Saint just down the street — with happily entrenched corporate — the Gaybucks — with ??? — Amante and the Money Mart — makes for a fun little jumble.
Yay! Now we can put something more useful in that spot. With Acme barbershop only a block away at Denny+Bellevue, and Rudy’s on Pine a 5 minute walk away, there was no point in having a Supercuts here. Most of the time the place was empty.
I could understand if this was a low-rent area and people didn’t have bank accounts to cash checks with, but those places are terrible.
I’ve lived near Supercuts since it opened. 20 years ago every one of those chairs were occupied from morning to night. Appointments were highly encouraged. They were really good, experienced stylists. It was a fun place. Haircuts were $6 when they opened. After about 8 years they raised their prices dramatically and hired cheap barber school graduates. Business collapsed and never returned. It’s no loss to the Hill that they are gone.
I go to Liana’s on 12th – just north of the liquor store – great $20 cut – OK to walk in – fast, full service as in nose hairs, ear hairs, etc. – three people, Liana the owner is the best, could not be happier.
Tons of gay men, good signal.
Today I came across a NEW Supercuts in Ballard, in the location (if memory serves) where the recently closed Scandinavian Food store used to be.
There’s a message in there somewhere…
Weird, I lived next door and always saw people in there.
Supercuts: 15 bucks for a buzz
ACME: 25+
Yeah, I see a reason for supercuts. Sure, it’s not hip but it was used alot.
Well,Jay..let me give you the real and correct information on the capitol hill supercuts: I worked for the company for 20 years and spent 1980 to 1990 in that location às a assistant mgr, mgr, and field trainer for that very location. They were a fine business with wonderful franchisees and a great staff. We did NOT hire cheap, barber school graduates. They were all licensed cosmetologists with plenty of experience. What cosmetology school did YOU graduate from?? The original businesses surrounding us, like Red Robin, and other trendy CLEAN and well respected ones drew in phenomenal, intelligent clients.
$8, was at the direction of the franchisor, Emerald corporation
