Sundance comes to Roy Street: Free ‘shorts’ screening

This Sunday, Roy St. Coffee & Tea and IndieFlix.com are hosting a free short film series, featuring films from this year’s Sundance Film Festival, which is still happening through this week. The event starts at 6 p.m. and the program repeats at 8 p.m.

IndieFlix CEO and filmmaker Scilla Andreen will be on hand to present the films and lead a discussion afterward. All of the films were ones she picked up for distribution at the Sundance and Slamdance film festivals.

This screening is part of IndieFlix’s weekly film series, hosted at Roy St. Coffee & Tea on Wednesdays and Sundays at 6 p.m., with repeat programming at 8 p.m.

(Full disclosure – I work for IndieFlix.com in their marketing department. I also am a regular CHS contributor and trained journalist, so I’m trying to be as ethical as possible!)

The indie film is playing at a Starbucks masquerading as an indie coffeehouse.

Yeah, I’m not happy about it being at a Starbucks masquerading as an indie coffeehouse either… but why not bring your own coffee from a true indie coffeeshop and enjoy the indie films anyway.

Yeah, a REAL indie filmmaker would rather boycott such an opportunity to get his or her film seen by an audience and hold out for the perfect venue, like a vegan anarchist rally at a transgender nudist colony. Much better to get your film seen by the right people than to get it seen at all.

Fight the power! Death to ticket buying sheep! You’ll see my movie only after I interview you and approve your political choices! Nobody else gets to see it!

Cletus, Cletus, maybe just a bit more caffeine than was ideal for you today? :-)

As Elise notes, buying a jolt at Joe Bar or Vivace and watching the film at the Fauxbucks will work out just fine. I would prefer, however, for our CHS reps to start reporting the name of the establishment in question correctly–as the door states, the name is “Roy Street Coffee & Tea, inspired by Starbucks”.

Look, people. I buy indie coffee whenever I have the option. I’ve probably bought 2 cups of starbuck’s coffee in the last year, out of the 5 or 6 I buy a week. But I’m a starving artist, and if I had an opportunity to show my work in the lobby of Phillip Morris or Dow Chemical, I’d take it.

Whether you like starbucks or not–and personally I think this whole “debranding” thing they’re doing with these stealthbucks is puzzling at best, creepy at worst–I’m still going to try to keep separate in my mind the independent artists who are being given a rare chance to showcase their work, and the evil corporate overlords who are providing the venue.

So go see the movies, but don’t buy a white chocolate mocha. You can support the troops while protesting the war.
