New gym, ‘mystery’ restaurant anchor Chloe Apartments retail space

The new Chloe Apartments on 14th and E. Union are currently vacant, but opportunities for new businesses and 117 apartment units will make it a busy staple on the Hill.

The biggest retail tenant in the apartment building is Mode of Fitness, a 3,000 sq. ft gym with a green-living platform. It promises to be “convenient and affordable,” according to owner and general manager Dominick Lucia. “We’ve spared no cost on aesthetic, design and high-end cardio and weight equipment. We will open early and stay open late and will be offering fitness classes.”

Lucia says membership rates to Mode of Fitness start at $29 a month to the general public and Chloe tenants get the first 6 months free with discounted monthly rates in the teens after that.

“No one can really compete with our quality,” said Lucia. “The only gym [with comparable] equipment is the downtown Washington Health Club.”

Lucia says his company was recruited into that space by Chloe building owners.

“They said they were looking for something non-corporate, locally-owned with a great aesthetic and brand that was convenient and affordable to the local demographic.”

Mode of Fitness is the first official retail tenant of the Chloe Apartments, but there is space for two restaurants and five retail stores or businesses.

“I’ve heard they’re looking for a restaurant that features healthy, small plates,” said Lucia. “And I’ve heard rumors of an acupuncture [clinic].”

Property manager Chasten Fulbright won’t hint at what other retail businesses will be there, only offering that one of the restaurant openings has a letter of intent on the space.

Whatever moves in is sure to be dog-friendly. The focal point of the apartment building’s advertising campaign is Chloe, the King Charles spaniel featured on the huge billboards that stretch across E. Madison St.

“The Chloe has been designed with two courtyards, a rooftop community room, deck, green roof and off-leash dog walk. With all of those design elements built in, the Chloe fosters resident interaction at nearly every level,” said Fulbright.

Rates start at $950 for a studio but building manager Chasten Fulbright said residents get 2 months free for signing a 12 month lease. Tenants were able to start moving in Nov. 28 to begin their December leases.

Mode of Fitness’ tentative grand opening is Dec. 15, but Lucia said that date depends on a few housekeeping logistics.

The prospect of having a gym on Capitol Hill where the equipment actually works is very exciting.

I too am excited to FINALLY get a nice gym nearby. I am confused by Mode of Fitness’ website though. Its all about food planning and trainers…I don’t see anything about a 3,000 sq foot gym (even “coming soon”). Am I missing it?

Hi RS,

When I spoke with Mode of Fitness, they did mention they were giving their site a makeover… I’d check back in a couple days to see if the information is live. :)

If you know the hill you should know that it’s East Madison *Street* not Ave!

Did you read the whole article?

The answer is yes, Chloe is a dog.

It will be great for probably 3 years unless the gym owners continue to not maintain the facility. I’ve seen too many gyms that look just great when they open and instead of keeping the facilities up the owners just keep taking in dues money but never keep the place up (American Health and Fitness in the convention center was taken over by Cascade which made no effort to maintain the place which then went to Gold’s which is now gone from the convention center.) I hope MOF does better than that. I also hope that their papering the neighborhood with posters for their business was a one off thing. So far south of Madison has managed to not have the utility pole postering mess that makes the rest of Capitol Hill look trashy.

Just go to 24 Hour Fitness on Denny. Not on Capitol Hill, but definitely close enough, and it’s the cheapest gym in town ($12.50 a month with Costco membership) with decent equipment.

as a point of comparison, the all-star gym on olive downtown is 27,000 sq ft. it’s about 2/3 the size of the space occupied by the barrio restaurant in the nearby trace north building.

Jeez… Is it me or is this blog devolving into a bunch of speculative posts about what shops and retail outfits will be opening up where? Isn’t this the kind of consumerism that must of us would profess to eschew?

Im really excited about the gym. The price is right with this crappy economy. Plus its right near where i live. Plus, the equipment they are using, is out of this world! Sign me up! :)

Don’t forget that the YMCA is nearby on Madison and a lot cheaper. Not as posh as the meat market commercial gyms some like to pay for, but to each their own…

Yes, CoolKat. Really.
Once I’ve gone to the YMCA to do whatever exercises I can’t do elsewhere (you know for free, like walk, run, bike, situps, pushups), I have enough money leftover to spend on getting waxed, tanned, and coated with the most expensive oils I can find to impress all the other hipsters with my body that is a gleaming shrine to… Unts unts unts unts…

SCCC in particular is a great low cost, lowfrills, option right on the hill.

And if we’re chiming in with non-Hill options: Don’t forget 24 Hr (walking back can be a workout in itself) and of course, Cappy’s. :)

yea you should also save that money when you get that good ol’ STAFF infection from the YMCA:)
