You will find political candidates in all sorts of places on Capitol Hill this summer. On Tuesday night, one will be campaigning in an ice cream shop. Dow Constantine, candidate for King County Executive and current member of the County Council, is holding a campaign event and fundraiser at Pike/Pine's line-inspiring Molly Moon's.
$25 will get you in the door of the Molly Moon's/Oddfellows/War Room co-hosted event. $100 gets you a tour of MM's ice cream making operation and a free pint for the road. Add the night to Constantine's list of hipster-connected events.
"I've been a friend to the music community. I've been a friend to bars and restaurants when they've faced heavy handed enforcement issues. They know me through that," Constantine said of his supporters with indie rock cred and cool kid business plans.
They also know him from working with him. Molly Moon Neitzel was Constantine's campaign manager in his successful run to retain his County Council seat in 2007.
"I am so proud of the work Molly has done in creating this two-shop empire," Constantine said. "It is a really great story of vision and tenacity."
CHS can't confirm if the two candidates Constantine is chasing, Susan Hutchinson and Larry Phillips, will be up the hill at Old School Frozen Custard but Constantine offered a chilly assessment of Phillips' flavor with voters.
"I would say he's vanilla but deep down that's my favorite flavor," Constantine said. "I'm a man of simple tastes."
No word on what he thinks Hutchinson is made of. The most recent poll shows the former TV news anchor leading the race. But it may not matter right now. With the 'top two' primary system, Constantine has to worry first about getting out in front of Phillips.
And that might mean it's time to get a little more aggressive on the jabs. A few minutes after his conversation with CHS, Constantine left a short voicemail with one important clarification.
"Rocky road," Constantine said. "That's the answer to the Larry Phillips question. Rocky road."
