What I learned from the Unpaving Paradise Open House

  • Vermillion is a really nice place to hang out. They have tasty snacks ($5 mac and cheese!), nice music that isn’t too loud to talk over, and its arty in the front and cozy in the back.  I was there for about three hours tonight running the open house and I still liked being there at the end of it – that’s saying a lot.
  • Presently showing at Vermillion: among other things, a collection of The Stranger’s Posters of the Week. It looks like dorm room from college, but better and with more posters.
  • A new and terrible art project is brewing on Capitol Hill, and its name is Larprosy. It’s a work in progress, but the creators said we should see the first episode around Halloween of this year. A hint of things to come: it’s a cartoon about LARPers that would fit in well on Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim. I am very afraid.
  • Sometimes the blog community overflows into the real life community; that is to say, some CHSers came to the open house – hurray!

There will be a rundown of the business part of the meeting shortly at the UP blog. Long story short, we would love it if everybody could pitch in with the fundraising effort for John and Summit park. We understand that times are tough and you probably don’t have much extra cash (know how that feels), but what we’d really like from our neighbors all over the Hill is their time and their special skills.

You know people in the neighborhood that we don’t – talk to them about the park, see if they’d like to get involved.  Help raise money by teaching cooking classes (actual possible fundraiser!) or talking to local corporations or crotcheting socks or whatever else you’d like to do.  Email us at [email protected] if you need ideas or you’d like to get on the listserve. We hope we get to see you soon :)

I’ve been hearing about the supposed garden at John and Summit for a couple of years now. I don’t remember much, just that parks and services would be turning the space into either a garden or a park (I had voted for garden but was really fine with either). I can’t remember the budget, but I do recall being told that the grant money would easily cover the cost of putting a P Patch there. Yet not only is the spot still very much a parking lot–I’m saw one things that said close to 300 grand is needed!!! I’m assuming that something other than a garden will be there, but what? I’m not finding many details about the spot itself, just multiple fund-raising announcements.
