There’s a 2-inch coat of snow on Capitol Hill this morning — including roads and sidewalks. We mark 32.5 F and steady on our digital here at HQ. Driving appears left to the chained though have watched a few intrepid Volvos make their way along the number streets. Hills, of course, only for the brave and the people who moved here in last 3 weeks. Bone chilling wind, to boot.

Streets – UPDATE Seattle Dept of Transportation sent this note out at 7:30a:
SEATTLE: SDOT crews were on standby last night. The weather forecast at midnight predicted no “road snow,” but cautioned that the situation could easily change. Night crews patrolled for ice, and when it began to snow, around 4 a.m., standby crews were called in to assist the regular nightshift crews.Between 4 and 6 a.m., snow dumped on Seattle streets, leaving approximately one and two inches, varying according to location. All available trucks with plows and sand treated major arterial streets throughout the city.
Crews were dedicated specifically to the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct, and salt was applied to make sure they remained in good condition. Roadway Structures crews inspected bridges and overpasses to make sure walkways were passable and snow was not presenting a problem for opening and closing the moveable bridges. Trucks with plows and sanders were also directed to trouble spots in West Seattle and Southeast Seattle, called in by Seattle Police and King County Metro Transit.
By 7 a.m. air temperatures were rising and snow was turning to slush on many streets. Crews will continue plowing and sanding as long as they are needed.
- Forecast – National Weather Service says things will warm up and we’ll even see sun later today.

Took a walk. The AWD and 4WD crowd have turned snow on roads into mush, not ice, so seeing more cars brave the hills. Just witnessed a crappy Honda Civic make its way up Aloha so probably won’t be long before you can get back to life. Sidewalks still have a lot of snow so get your galoshes out.
I haven’t seen any evidence of delays or re-routes yet but be careful of relying on the bus-tracker sites. They use pre-programed routes not GPS so won’t reflect any snow routes.
Saw one southbound 48 and nothing else. 48s were going northbound sporadically. No 43s in sight.
My bff just walked from north Broadway to Pine & 3rd along the 49’s route and didn’t see a single bus.
I saw a 43 at Pine and Broadway about an hour ago.
“I would say they were way off course.” – Mr. Teasdale, Red Dawn
We waited 25 mins for a 43 before giving up and driving at 8:15am.
I waited from 7:50 to 8:20 on 10th & Highland but nary a 49 passed me by. I then walked down 10th and across the U bridge with only one 49 seen headed up the hill. The driver had a SMILE sign in the front window but for some reason I didn’t.
…and didn’t see it. So I’m working from home. I’d be appalled if it took the snow route on such a harmless day.
early this morning it didn’t seem that harmless. although the 545 doesn’t really hit side streets, does it? so not sure why that route would have much trouble.
in cap hill on side streets around 7am there was LOTS of slipping and sliding on hills.
Yeah, the 49 never came this morning. I walked downtown from Broadway and Republican to catch a 70-series, and was amazed to see that the 43/8 bus stops and the 14 bus stops were packed with people who must have thought (as I did) that Metro would surely still be running with chilled slush. Ugh.
