Snowstorm live thread

The snow we waited for all day Wednesday finally hit early Thursday. Around 2:35a, we got nailed by pellets of hard, frozen snow. Then thunder and lightning around 5:30a and now a heavy, thorough coat of snow is forming on Capitol Hill. All schools are closed today. The streets are a mess. Go out for a walk. Enjoy it. Stay warm.

Here’s a recent post on some useful things to know about snow on the Hill — like where to sled in Volunteer Park, for example. And here’s a link to all of our posts tagged ‘snow.’

Tips or photos? Send them to jseattle or call (206) 399-5959. I’m out taking pictures and seeing what I can see.

For the geeks out there, follow Seattle’s Twitterverse with the winter storm hash #seatst http://search.twitter.com/search?q=seatst

I’m also yabbering about what I see here: http://twitter.com/jseattle

Don’t know if Metro will be updating this — but here is their adverse weather route advisory page. I would assume buses will be delayed and/or shut down. Stick to the bigger routes that serve Madison/Broadway.

UPDATE: 8:10 AM
Back home now uploading a bunch of pics. Flip through the picture viewer on the side to enjoy. Going to go enjoy the snow and get some breakfast. See you out there.

UPDATE: 11:15 AM
Will continue to update this thread through day. Send in your tips and pics.

UPDATE: 11:25 AM
Tonight’s Community Council holiday part is postponed until January 8th. You’ll have to wait for Olivar stew, Poppy savory tarts and High 5 Pie pies.

UPDATE: 11:39 AM
Just got this great picture from neighbor Norma of a bus pileup at 15th and Pine. She writes: “I took this picture at 11:30 today. The buses just keep stacking up. It’s bus numbers 10, 11, 12 that are deciding to give up and take a little break here. One of the came within inches of sliding into the street signs.”

My favorite line from the Metro weather page, for buses like the 10 and 12:
“Due to adverse weather, this route is operating an unpublished reroute.”

Um, yeah, stay home.

PS, way to get from Vita to Victrola and back in an hour, J.

Stay away from Madison at 19th – big accident and people can’t get through the intersection. Cars are just pulled over to the side of Madison.

Easy walking all the way. If things get desperate there’s an Alaska Ale truck stuck at 20th & Thomas…..

I’m off-hill today at the boyfriend’s, but want to return later (in time for the CHCC mixer, of course!) I just need to get to Broadway & Mercer, from Greenwood, and I’m driving. Am I out of luck?

Not too bad when i walked through 45 min ago. Buses with chains were making it both ways. Compacted snow but the somewhat broken up…

I’m on the 10th floor of the One Union Square Bldg. downtown. Whenever I look out the window, all I can think is “I’m trapped in a giant snowglobe.”

On the way to work all the three digit buses going up Olive on their way out of Seattle were moving an inch at a time (literally) with their snow chains on.

I don’t know about the buses within downtown and the Hill, but any going to outlying areas are infrequent and ridiculously slow. Good luck everybody.

Just got this “Breaking News” email from the Seattle Times regarding bus service:
King County bus service to be limited for afternoon commute

King County Metro Transit will be focusing on core service until weather and road conditions improve, which means almost all bus service will be significantly limited as we head into the afternoon commute.

We just drove from the top of the hill to Ravenna Whole Foods and it was ok. The only trouble we had was getting to 10th. We did a little sliding.

If you post your link in the first line of your comment it will be “hot.” Otherwise, you will need to use HTML to make it clickable (I wanted to include the HTML template but it keeps encoding it, sorry).

Thanks for sharing all of your photos and videos of SnowGlobe Seattle 2008!
